Episode 39: Advance Planning for the Inevitable
For this week's conversation, I am joined by Dr. Karen Moss. Dr. Moss is a registered nurse who was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas. Dr. Moss began her nursing career in the Bahamas and obtained her associates degree at the University of the Bahamas. She has since gone on to complete her Bachelors Degree in Nursing, her Master's degree and her PhD degree in the United States. Dr. Moss guides us through a difficult topic this week. She sheds tremendous light on advance care planning, healthcare decision making, and the end-of-life decision making processes particularly for Black/African American adults living with dementias.

Guest Biography
Dr. Karen Moss is a registered nurse who was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas where she began her nursing career after obtaining an associate degree in nursing at the University of The Bahamas. She then completed her bachelor’s degree in nursing at the Adventist University of Health Sciences in Orlando, Florida. Dr. Moss then went on to complete both her master’s and PhD degrees at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. After which, she relocated to the Cleveland, Ohio area for a post-doctoral fellowship at Case Western Reserve University. This fellowship was complete just ahead of her becoming a tenure-track assistant professor in the College of Nursing with a joint appointment in the College of Medicine at The Ohio State University.
Dr. Moss’ program of research focuses on the neuroscience of pain, advance care planning, healthcare decision-making, and quality-of-life outcomes for older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their family caregivers. She examines factors that influence pain and end-of-life decision-making processes for Black/African American older adults living with this disease and their family caregivers. Dr. Moss also seeks to better understand family caregiver stress.
