Shifting Perspectives is a weekly conversation with Yolande. Yolande, a Canadian of Caribbean descent, now calls the Turks and Caicos Islands home. This podcast challenges women to fuel themselves with diversity in the way they think, the way they work, the way they parent and the way they live their lives.

Episode 47: Our Heritage, Culture and Identity
This week I am joined by Dr. Dellareese Higgs. Dr. Higgs is passionate about the Caribbean and her research interests include Ethnic and Cultural studies, Tourism Studies, Gender, and Caribbean Identities. Dr. Higgs walks us through defining culture and heritage and how they shape our collective and individual identities in our multicultural Caribbean. We discuss the unique identity of the Turks and Caicos Islands in relation to the rest of the Caribbean as well as how this identity influences the way we educate, work and live. We discussed the effects of colonialism on the Caribbean and the impact it continues to have on contemporary Caribbean. Dr. Higgs encourages listeners to be willing to have difficult conversations that explore our past, the way that past is impacting our present and to be intentional in embracing our valued heritage, culture, history and identity.
