Episode 42: SVG Relief
For this week's episode I am joined once again by Vincentian designer Kimya Glasgow. Unfortunately, this time we are not talking about fashion, but instead about La Soufriere Volcano. La Soufriere , though an active volcano, had been rather silent from 1979 to December of 2020, when an effusive eruption began. On April 9th following a few days of increased activity an explosive eruption began. Join Kimya and me as we discuss the current conditions in SVG as well as what individuals can do to help. (Recorded: April 20th, 2021).
Since that time, from April 22nd to today (May 1), the seismic activity has remained low but the alert level is still red. Added to this already critical situation, 2 days ago, following unusually heavy rainfall, the island was also faced with the fast moving rocks, ash, vegetation, and water (lahars) coming down from the volcano causing even more flooding, mudslides and infrastructure damages. Please visit this week’s show page for ways to help support relief efforts in SVG.

Rally Round SVG -University of the West Indies
Consistent with our traditional emergency assistance protocols, The University of the West Indies is activating a two-phased approach to the response efforts for Saint Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG).
The first phase is the rapid response in the deployment of relief aid and experts to assist in the areas of greatest need in close coordination with the Government and National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, while the second phase concentrates on the mobilisation of expertise in rehabilitation response.
In this immediate phase, we encourage staff, students, alumni, friends and partners to join in contributing financial resources with special priority towards healthcare, education and displaced students left vulnerable following the eruption of the La Soufrière Volcano.

eShopper.vc - Disaster Relief (Shelter Amenities)
Some experts have predicted that La Soufriere could continue erupting for weeks or even months. While our care packages have been able to cater to the short term needs of evacuees, being relegated to a public or private shelter for prolonged periods can begin to take its toll on the physiological and mental health of thousands of evacuees, including young children. Items such as microwaves, beds, fridges, portable showers and even loudspeakers and televisions for hosting movie nights and karaoke are greatly helping evacuees to cope in their current situation. Please consider donating any of the following products to a shelter of your choice or to any shelter in need.

UK- SVG COMBINED RESPONSE TO LA SOUFRIERE ERUPTION
H.E Cenio Lewis, High Commissioner of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is working closely with the UK-SVG FRIENDSHIP TRUST to coordinate the various fundraising efforts by Vincentians living in the UK Diaspora.
You will now be aware that at 08:41 (SVG time) 9th April 2021 an explosive eruption began at the La Soufriere volcano in St. Vincent. An evacuation effort is already underway for residents living in the red zone.
While the Authorities including the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) is busily responding to the unfolding situation, it is recognised that it is also important to prepare to assist our families and loved ones as the need arises including the post-disaster recovery.
Your support at this time will ensure that persons directly affected will receive the critical support needed to get their lives back to some level of normalcy when the all clear is given. We continue to monitor developments on the ground to support any requirement to support those in shelters across the country.
Notwithstanding the above, please continue to pray for St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
